May 29, 2025 — The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled new Higher National Diploma (HND) programs in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Networking. This initiative aims to modernize the nation’s technical education system and align it with global technological advancements.
According to Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the move is designed to equip young Nigerians with relevant digital skills essential for the modern economy. He stated:
“We have unbundled the traditional HND programmes into more specific skill areas. This is already being implemented, and under the Nigeria Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), we are offering more specialised training modules in areas like AI, cybersecurity, and networking.”
🔧 Embracing Digital Tools for Governance
Beyond curriculum changes, the NBTE has integrated digital tools into its governance and oversight processes. A notable innovation is the deployment of a digital accreditation platform powered by AI to monitor academic standards, prevent faculty duplication, and curb malpractice in polytechnics.
Prof. Bugaje explained:
“If a lecturer appears on multiple polytechnic websites, the AI system will flag it. This will help us maintain integrity in the accreditation process.”
Under this new system, technical institutions are now required to upload detailed information on their facilities, faculty, and equipment to a centralized digital platform. This shift reduces the need for physical accreditation visits, cutting costs and minimizing manipulation.
📘 Setting Standards with MNAS
The transition is guided by the Minimum National Academic Standards (MNAS), which outlines specific requirements for each National Diploma (ND) and HND program, covering areas such as faculty qualifications, infrastructure, and equipment.
Prof. Bugaje emphasized the importance of these reforms:
“Nigeria has no choice but to embed technology in education and economic development. This is how we can unlock growth and prosperity in the digital age.”
🌍 Aligning with Global Trends
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to position Nigerian polytechnics for global relevance and boost the nation’s economic competitiveness. By focusing on specialized skill areas and leveraging technology, Nigeria aims to harness the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
